New works by Susie Thomas printed on paper.
From a distance three separate rectangular pieces are visible on the immediate wall as I walk into the gallery, seemingly having the appearance of code or abstract forms.
On closer inspection these works are comprised of variations of the word woof or meow. Sometimes woooof, sometimes wooooooof. As far as meaning can be deciphered, there is a definite rhythm that for example culminates towards the middle of the meow composition in particular when the ‘ooooooooows’ grow longer and I begin to imagine a cat screaming.
On the other hand a de-coding of the individual meows in the piece is perhaps both an anthropomorphic and counter productive starting point, like understanding the communication of a dog or a cat when translated into an anthropocentric based system of language.
While an onomatopoeia is generally used as amimetic language device, here the imitation of sound exists only as grammatical complexity rather than a translation between man and animal.
Susie Thomas ‘Word works on Paper’ are part of her show with Patrick Lundberg at Happy Gallery. Running from the 20/3/08 to the 12/4/08
