Jim said to visit the Experimental Art Foundation
in Adelaide. The basement was the venue for
performance work but still had the feel of its
original purpose (a jam factory). While I was
in Adelaide, the work was prepared by stringing
off an area with sisal and gathering most of
the equipment necessary for the performance
to take place. My stay was cut short by having
to return to New Zealand to teach. Jim kindly
offered to perform the work during the up coming
Arts Festival. The photos are by Tony Coleing
Lighting; Outside needs to be fairly equal
distributiontion, so that the string has a
stringiness.
Position: Place the floodlight behind you and
directed downwards so that when you are seated
with the
pounding between your knees, the cast shadow
of your head covers the block.
Pounding; Pound the root ginger one piece at
a time adding to boiling liquid as you go.
Rests; If you need to take occasional rests
that's OK so long as the boiler keeps steaming.
Basting: If you do enough pounding ....and
if you use a 'rolling boil' eventually it will
be spreadable... onto the ceiling ...take care
not to drip the hot liquid on yourself.
....When you have finished ...turn off the
floodlight and remove yourself from the strung
off area.
