Jim Allen has been practicing since the 1950’s and has been instrumental in the development of post-object and performance based art in Australasia. He was among the early exhibitors at the Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide, South Australia and Founding Head of Sydney College of the Arts, Art School (which later became Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney).

In 2007 Allen restaged his 1976 performance, Poetry for Chainsaws, Michael Lett Gallery, Auckland, and the two-part installation O-AR at St. Paul St. Gallery, Auckland; and in 2000 he presented the video works Contact, Post Objective and Hanging by a Thread at Artspace, Auckland.


In October, 2008 in the exhibition Noli Me Legere at the Michael Lett Gallery, Auckland he presented a vintage photographic print documenting the performance piece, Contact, first realized in 1974 at the Auckland Art Gallery.

In November 2008 he contributed the DVD Hanging by a Thread (2000) to the Artspace 24/25 show, Artspace, Sydney.

February/March 2009 in a new work, he showed the second of a tri-part series Hanging by a Thread 11 at Michael Lett, Auckland.

In June and July he will be showing two works News (Govett-Brewster Art Gallery 2002) and Poetry for Chainsaws (Experimental Art Foundation 1976, Michael Lett 1980, St. Paul St. Gallery 2008).
