I had been up the lakes at South Kaipara to
meet with an old friend on their farm. We were
observing
dragonflies on a spring day. It was exquisitely
beautiful. I wanted to do a box that bought
out the stillness and
warmth. The warmth you could fall asleep in,
with no worries, as the outside wouldn't threaten
you.
I had to work on it over a long time and the
box transformed itself from my original concept
to its current
shape when I decided to add water using torn
blue tissue and blue colour across the segregated
sections.
Water is very important - a lot of my works
have water. Water is unconfined - water flows
on. In the 1980's I
went to an exhibition in Australia - an installation
by a Greek woman, I think I am not sure. She
used sheets,
and I realised the symbols for water are endless.
Anything can be water, it is a very unconfined
substance. It can be heavy and solid too sometimes.
