Diana Thornley - Works - Apis - mellifera

Apis - mellifera
1999 - 2000
Mixed media
390 x 120 x 110mm

I had bought the cream and always saw the box as a small ancient Greek temple. I aleays new it would be
something one day.
They have constructed it (the box) in a particular way (most are small boxes) with colour, words and the pink.
When I put the bits of seaweed in it I remembered a Russian story with a witch who walks with crows legs. It
haunted me until one day I wanted to use pink in another box, so I painted a few bits of cedar pink and finding
a tall wine box - somehow it was the Greek temple as always was to me. I set it very high, just like the
Acropolis is set very high.
I am not involved in a collection of objects. I never think of them as a collection of items. I am interested in
how they combine. They are about objects, which are nothing in themselves, but when they and the colours
come together they transform themselves completely and become something else.
Evocation - it is like a scent that takes you back to a part of your life - a garden or place.
